Continuing our month of shows about comic communities around the UK, Alex Fitch travels to Manchester to talk to four local creators. Adam Cadwell (Blood Blokes), John Allison (Bad Machinery), Joe List (Freak Leap) and Chris Doherty (Video Nasties) talk about self publishing, the influence of other media on their work, using the internet to promote their comics, plus the experience of living and working in the North West of England.

Karrie Fransman exhibition

This solo exhibition by comic creator Karrie Fransman‘s (The Guardian, The Times, Random House) plays with the boundaries of the comic medium by fitting comics in weird and wonderful places- dolls houses, jewellery boxes and quilts. With the advance of digital technologies, comics are escaping their paper covers and spilling out into the world, becoming visual and interactive.

To mark the opening of the exhibition, Karrie will be joined by Comics Journalist Paul Gravett and experimental comics pioneer Daniel Merlin Goodbery for a panel discussion on Thursday June 21st, at 7:30pm.

Exhibition runs from 22nd June – 19 July

Sina Sparrow exhibition at Blush Bar

Small press creator Sina Sparrow (aka Sina Evil) is exhibiting a selection of his recent comics work entitled ‘Girls and boys’, featuring deconstruction of homoerotic superhero art and homages to Donna Summer.

Gosh! comics signing – LXG: Century 2009

Alan Moore and Kev O’Neill will be signing copies of their latest League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic – Century: 2009 – in a four hour session at Gosh!, but come early to avoid long queues…

Oxford based cartoonist Kate Brown (The DFC, The Phoenix, Fish + Chocolate) will be talking about her work at this month’s LDC before the monthly meeting for female comic creators and their fans breaks for the summer holidays, alongside SelfMadeHero directors Doug Wallace and Emma Hayley who will be talking about their independent UK graphic novel publishing company.

Support Badger the movie

A London based documentary and animation team is bringing Howard Hardiman’s beloved comic Badger to life in a new animated film that will also contain footage of the process of making Howard’s comic and its relevance to mental health issues.
