Starting a month of shows about the cross-over between comic books and video games, Alex Fitch talks to web comics creator Daniel Merlin Goodbrey about the latest examples of his experiments in interactive ‘hyper-comics’: including Jack’s Abstraction available on Android devices, and the forthcoming A Duck, which allow comic strip readers to follow differing narrative paths in various directions on the virtual page. Alex and Daniel also talk about other recent examples of the intersection between games and comics including Batman: Arkham Asylum and inFAMOUS 2: THE FAME STRiPS which he designed the flash interface for.

Becky Cloonan at Orbital Comics
The art of American comic book artist Becky Cloonan is on display at Orbital Comics from 20th August to 20th September. Best known for her collaborartions with writer Brian Wood, the exhibtion curated by Tom Humberstone includes around 20 original pieces of work on show as well as some limited screenprints, postcard sets and a hand-painted guitar (only on display the first weekend of the show).
Becky herself will be in London on the 20th and will be available to chat to and sign books/art at the private view (8-10 pm 20th August 2010). There will also, as with all private views, be some free drink.

Concluding webcomics month on the show, Alex Fitch catches up with artist Sean Azzopardi and writer Daniel Merlin Goodbrey as the first series of their epic webcomic Necessary Monsters comes to its conclusion after a total of 125 pages serialised over two years. The series mixes a ‘black ops’ style spy thriller with the tropes of modern horror films and bizarre characters with ultra violence to maximum effect. Alex talks to Daniel and Sean about the progression of the strip, the various ways it’s been published and their collaborations with another webcomics creator – Douglas Noble – on a zombie western (The Rule of Death) and surrealistic thriller (Sightings of Wallace Sendek) respectively.

ComiXmas: When Worlds Collide is an exhibition of fantastic images from contemporary comic books and graphic novels, featuring work by the best contemporary comic book artists, along with images from past great masters of the genre. On display in the exhibition are prints reproduced at a strikingly larger scale by artists such as Osamu Tezuka, one of the fathers of Japanese manga and anime; Hergé, the Belgian creator of Tintin; Woodrow Phoenix, creator of the award winning Rumble Strip; Andrzej Klimowski, illustrator of The Master & Margarita; Reinhard Kleist, illustrator of Johnny Cash: I See A Darkness; From Hell creators Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, and many other artists. We will be showing an eclectic range of films including cult classics and rarities you may not have seen before.
The next film we will be showing is a late night screening of Bad Santa – staring Billy Bob Thornton on Friday, 11th December at 22:30.
The traditional Christmas tale will never be the same after this cleverly twisted and merrily irreverent story of a Santa so bad he’s wickedly funny. This is one of the best Christmas movies of recent years.
The cinema has a bar, and you can even bring your drinks in and watch the film!
