Emma discusses using Patreon to fund her webcomic Breaks, Paul talks about collecting shorter works that were unlikely to find a republisher, while Anastasia and Mike explore the advantages and disadvantages of using Kickstarter to pay for unusual themed anthologies. Freud, Shakespeare and Marx: Continuing a month of shows looking at the work of female cartoonists, Alex Fitch talks to a pair of artists whose graphic novels have covered the work of masters of theatre, philosophy and psychoanalysis. In a Q and A recorded at Gosh! Comics as part of the SCI-FI-LONDON film festival, Emma Vieceli discusses her work on SelfMadeHero’s Manga Shakespeare line, drawing adaptations of a post-apocalyptic Hamlet, and 19th Century Much ado about nothing. Also, in an interview (translated by Alex Spiro) recorded at ELCAF French cartoonist Anne Simon discusses her graphic novel biographies of Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud, published in English by Nobrow. Continuing ‘women in comics’ month on the show, Alex Fitch talks to Emma Vieceli, illustrator of the Manga Shakespeare adaptations of Hamlet and Much ado about nothing who has also contributed to the graphic anthology “Comic Book Tattoo” which adapts the songs of Tori Amos into strip format. Alex and Emma also talk about the crossover between traditional Western comics and Manga as a new generation of small press creators in the UK experiment with both forms, a practice that is encouraged by the ‘Artists Alley’ that Emma helps organise at the twice yearly MCM Expos in the Docklands and the publishing collective ‘Sweatdrop studios’ that she’s a member of.
