Diverse Superheroes: In the first of two early Autumn specials, Alex Fitch chats to the creators of superhero comics with diverse ensemble casts. Eve Greenwood talks about their superhero webcomic Inhibit and LGBT+ publishing house Quindre Press, in a Q and A recorded at Cartoon County.
Also, former Eastenders writer Colin Brake discusses the history of his kickstarted comic The ME Generation to be drawn by artist Yishan Li, and how he nearly became the Doctor Who script editor in the early 1990s.

In a two hour early Autumn special, Alex Fitch talks to the creators of comics with ensemble casts. Jenny Robins discusses her graphic novel Biscuits (Assorted), which presents a snapshot of the intertwining lives of modern women from diverse backgrounds; Scott Jason Smith explores his book Marble Cake, a magical realist look at a community in South London; Eve Greenwood converses about their superhero webcomic Inhibit and LGBT+ publishing house Quindre Press; and former Eastenders and Doctor Who writer Colin Brake explains the history of his kickstarted comic The ME Generation to be drawn by artist Yishan Li.

Pride in Comics: In this month’s show, Alex Fitch talks to a pair of zine creators turned graphic novelists about their work on gender and sexuality. Eleanor Crewes discusses her forthcoming book The Times I Knew I Was Gay an autobiographical title which dramatised her experiences of coming out, and Dr. Meg-John Barker explores writing their non-fiction books Queer: A Graphic History and Gender: A Graphic Guide, which have revitalised Icon Books’ Introducing… series in a larger format, with a greater amount of sequential art. Kickstarting the Riven Seal: Continuing a month of shows about comic book creators who have used online fundraising to launch various titles, Alex Fitch talks to Amanda Gomes and Julie Wright about their webcomic Riven Seal – Ars Ianua, which is being collected as a graphic novel via kickstarer funding. Riven Seal is an on-going fantasy narrative set in a bustling port town in the 1860s, where the use of magic, demonic possession and exorcism is common day in an all-ages strip which mixes positive depictions of LGBTQIA characters with manga and anime style art. Amanda and Julie discuss the origin of the comic, their use of sites such as Patreon and the commissioning of branded tea bags to fund their work, and interactions with fans at gaming and comic conventions. Fitch and Ilya discuss the project’s history, the artist’s more cartoony style used in the book, and how the story connects to his much loved End of the Century Club comics. Homogeneity in Gay educational comics: Continuing a month of shows about gay and lesbian comics, Panel Borders presents a lecture by post doctoral researcher Doctor Jordana Greenblatt on the similarity in content of gay comics about safe practices and HIV, concentrating on Safer Sex Comix (by Alexander and Gregg, publ. 1987 by Gay Men’s Health Crisis of New York) and Alex et la vie d’apres (by Thierry Robberecht and Fabrice Neaud, publ. 2008 by Ex Aequo), recorded at “Ethics under cover – the 4th international Conference on Comics and Medicine”, Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Jordana discusses the similarity of sexual expression found in graphic narratives published 20 years apart – one designed as an educational pamphlet and the other a modern graphic novella based on the experiences of young gay men in Belgium – and talks to Alex Fitch about how the talk fits into her ongoing research and interests.
