Youth and Wellbeing: In this ‘feature length’ podcast looking at comics about youth and wellbeing, a quartet of artists discuss their work which touches on these topics. Former Comics Laureate Hannah Berry chats to renowned cartoonist Alison Bechel about her latest book The Secret to Superhuman Strength, as well as her classics Dykes to Watch Out For and Fun Home in a Q and A recorded at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. This month, Alex Fitch talks to comic creators about multimedia engagement with their sequential art. Chinese cartoonist Chihoi chats about his comic The Train, which is currently on display in the riverside window of the the Royal Festival Hall, London, and at Graphic Brighton, audio producer Lance Dann and graphic novelist Hannah Berry discuss a comic and podcast called The Rez, which is a science-fiction title about kindness aimed at a young audience.

Telling Truths: Alex Fitch talks to a quartet of graphic novelists whose work reflects events from history over the last hundred years. In a panel discussion recorded at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, Hannah Berry, Darryl Cunningham and Fumio Obata discuss how their work is based on recent culture and economics regarding graphic novels Livestock, Graphic Science and Fumio’s Fukishima comic. Also, cartoonist Jaime Huxtable talks about illustrating the graphic novel adaptation of George Orwell’s autobiographical essay Such, Such Were The Joys, with script by Sean Michael Wilson, in a Q and A recorded at Cartoon County.

Comics academic Elle Whitcroft introduces Ottilie Hainsworth and her students Charlotte Semlyen, Catherine Moran, Tania Suryabandara, Judith Biddlestone and Nick Cannan regarding their creation of a strip anthology about The Theatre Royal, Brighton featuring untold tales of orphans, psychic cleaners and Marlene Dietrich! Girls Comics: In a 90 minute special edition of Panel Borders, cartoonist and Graphic Novels editor Corinne Pearlman introduces a pair of interviews about “Girls Comics”, periodicals aimed at young female audiences from the second half of the 20th Century: Comics scholar Mel Gibson interviews the author of the Trebizon novels for Young Adults, Anne Digby, who was also the writer of a variety of strips for Tammy, including “Olympia Jones” and “Tennis Star Tina”.

Coinciding with a career retrospective at University of Brighton Gallery, George Hardie discusses the influences of comics and sequential art on his illustrations and design work for clients such as Pink Floyd; at a conference on the Gothic at Manchester Metropolitan University, Hannah Berry talks about Adamtine which depicts travellers on an evocative haunted train, and at Cartoon County, Brighton, Joe Decie talks about his first full length graphic novel Collecting Sticks, published by Jonathan Cape.

Graphic Brighton festival

A one day event, being held at the University of Brighton Faculty of Arts, May 24th 2014, curated by Paul Slater, Barbara Chamberlin and Alex Fitch. Guests include Chris Riddell, David Lloyd, John Higgins, Nicola Streeten, Hannah Berry, Corinne Pearlman, Daniel Locke, Joe Decie, Neil Evans (a.k.a. Nelson Evergreen), Lawrence Elwick, Ian Williams, Paul O’Connell, Nye Wright, Hannah Eaton, Paul Collicutt and Tim Pilcher.
The day will comprise talks, panel discussions, workshops and much more, and is only a five minute walk from the sea front for a lunchtime barbeque!

Great British Horror Comics: This episode concludes a month of episodes looking at horror comics, and includes interviews with a quartet of British creators who work in that genre. Alex Fitch talks to David Hine, author of Strange Embrace and writer of a variety of horror comics for American publishers, I.N.J. Culbard, the illustrator of Self Made Hero’s H.P.Lovecraft adaptations and Hannah Berry, whose second graphic novel Adamtine is a claustrophobic tale of terror set on a train, in a panel recorded at the first Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
Also, Gareth Brookes discusses his extraordinary graphic novel The Black Project, illustrated via linocut and embroidery, which tells the story of an unusual young man who makes his girlfriends out of found materials, and mixes The Silence of the Lambs with arts and crafts magazines.
