Weaver discusses her urban graphic novels Big Ugly and Something City which tell the lives of friends and neighbours in city environments, Smith chats about the kickstarter campaign to collect the small press British comic The Bogie Man ,a pastiche of Bogart noir films set in Glasgow, plus his career in British comics.

Uncanny Landscapes: In the 2 hour Panel Borders Autumn Special, Alex Fitch talks to three comic creators whose work explores uncanny locations. In a pair of Q and As recorded at Cartoon County, Brighton, Chris Reynolds discusses the retro-futuristic aesthetic of his Mauretania Comics, set in post-industrial landscapes, and Sarah Gordon chats about the evocative folk horror and folktales inhabiting her collection Vicious Creatures.
Also, Alex interviews lecturer and graphic novelist Nick Sousanis about his book Unflattening which uses Edwin Abbott Abbott’s Flatland as a jumping off point for an examination of human communication.

Architecture and Comics: In the last of the current series of the monthly show about culture and the built environment, a pair of writers investigate the depiction of architecture in sequential art. Alex Fitch talks to Sean Azzaopardi about his graphic novel The Voice of the Hall which depicts the history of Hornsey Town Hall, from its conception as a public building to the present day. Also, Enrique Bordes Cabrera discusses his book Cómic, arquitectura narrativa, which investigates the many depictions of architecture in comics and graphic novels throughout the 20th Century in a talk compèred by Enrique Del Rey Cabero. Recorded at Waterstones, Crouch End, and TORCH, Oxford.

Female Flâneurs: In the monthly show about culture and the built environment, Alex Fitch talks to a pair of artists whose work is influenced by their experience of exploring the urban landscape. Lizzy Stewart discusses her book Walking Distance, an illustrated essay on the experience of being a woman out walking, merging the personal and the political aspects of this activity, and Peony Gent explores her Wakefield Walkbooks – a couple of ‘maps’ of the town which mix her observational drawings and poetry, commissioned by Yorkshire Sculpture International’s Index Festival. Charles Dickens and EcoCities: Alex Fitch talks to architects, curators and practitioners who promote architecture in wider culture. This month: exhibition designer Rebecca Simpson discusses the creation of ‘Childhood in Dickensian London’ at Senate House Library, the process of chosing images for display and collaborating with curators.
Also, architect C.J. Lim talks about his visual explorations of EcoCities and other futuristic concerns in a variety of illustrated books, which incorporate comic strips, diagrams and models, including such titles as smartcities, resilient landscapes + ecowarriors, and his Realms of Impossibility trilogy. Researching Comics’ Landscapes: In the first of a pair of podcasts looking at academics’ research into comics, this show looks at their explorations of comics in different landscapes. Alex Fitch talks to Dr. Dominic Davies about his work on comics that explore inequality in the Global South in a Q and A recorded at City College, University of London, for the author’s book launch of Urban Comics. Also, as part of a panel discussion on horror comics at Portsmouth DarkFest, Barbara Chamberlin discusses her PhD on depictions of witches and haunted landscapes in comics, and her forthcoming collaborations with artist Jessica Marlton.

Anise Gallery / Amiens Cathedral: In a new monthly show looking at how Architecture is represented in Culture, Alex Fitch talks to artists, curators, film-makers and writers who have contributed to unique representations of architecture in different media. This month Jacquelyn Jubert and Joe Robson (founders of Anise Gallery, Shad Thames) and artists Owen D. Pomery and Alison Samson discuss the representation of architecture in graphic arts, and academic Justin Wadlow (University of Picardy Jules Verne) talks about the posters he’s helped curate for Amiens BD festival, which include representations of the city’s Cathedral and other architectural landmarks (recorded at Graphic Brighton, May 2019). City Strips: Alex Fitch talks to Goldsmiths College Design lecturer Stuart Bannocks about his ‘zine City Strips which collages panels from superhero comics with the hero removed, to create a travelogue of fictional cities such as Batman’s Gotham and Superman’s Metropolis. Alex and Stuart discuss the second edition of City Strips: Amazing City which reconstructs issue 95 of Amazing Spider-Man from 1971, featuring the webslinger’s trip to London, and also explore Stuart’s cinema trailer project Sub Dogma 13. Richard McGuire, Here: Continuing a month of shows about architecture and landscape in comics, Alex Fitch talks to cartoonist Richard McGuire about his epic 300 page graphic novel Here, published by Hamish Hamilton / Pantheon Books. Here is told entirely in double page spreads, with the view of the reader never moving from a fixed gaze at the corner of one room, however the narrative moves back and forth in time from the creation of the Earth to the 25th Century, with various eras overlapping through different panels on the page. Alex and Richard discuss the genesis of the project with its origin as a 6 page strip in Raw magazine, how the plotting of the book is influenced by his love of music and how the print version differs from the interactive ebook. Sequential City: Starting a month of shows about architecture and landscape in comics, Alex Fitch talks to co-curators Heather Gray and Owen D. Pomery, and featured artist Alison Sampson about the exhibition Sequential City, currently on display at Anise Gallery, London. Alex discusses with Heather the challenges of displaying comic book art in a gallery devoted to the aesthetics of architecture, to Owen about his comic Between the Billboards and choice of artists on display, and to Alison about her graphic novella Genesis and the website Think of a City, which invites comic book artists to depict a fictional metropolis.
