In a Q and A hosted by John Freeman, Russell Walks and Rachael Stott discuss illustrating the adventures of the USS Enterprise in a variety of Star Trek books and comics, and Alex Fitch chats to Dave McKean about his recent collections Thalamus and Prompt – Conversations with AI, which include an overview of his career so far, and experience of working with new technology.

Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash: To coincide with Armistice Week, Panel Borders presents a Q and A originally recorded at Graphic Brighton (University of Brighton, 2016).Alex Fitch talks to graphic novelist and filmmaker Dave McKean about his book and multimedia live production Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash which dramatises the life of the talented war artist, made in association with 14-18 Now, the Lakes International Comic Art Festival and Amiens BD festival.
Black Dog will next be performed at Macready Theatre, Rugby on November 9th / 10th 2018.

To coincide with Armistice Week, Panel Borders is proud to present a couple of interviews recorded at Graphic Brighton (University of Brighton, 2016), in which Alex Fitch talks to the creators of a pair of graphic novels that illuminate the lives of two notable people affected by The Great War. Dave McKean discusses his Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash made in association with 14-18 Now, and the touring musical presentation of the book; Kate Evans explores her Graphic Biography of Rosa Luxemburg, Red Rosa, which illustrates the life of the Polish Revolutionary.
Black Dog will next be performed at Macready Theatre, Rugby on November 9th / 10th 2018.

Graphic Brighton 2016 – 9th and 10th Dec

This year’s Graphic Brighton festival and conference is taking place at the University of Brighton City Campus on 9th and 10th December, with the theme of war comics and graphic novels about wartime resistance. Guests talking about their work include Dave McKean, Bryan and Mary Talbot, Kate Evans, Ben Dickson, plus the editors and the creators of “Brighton’s Graphic War” and many more.
On Friday 9th December there is an academic conference in the University’s building on Edward Street, with talks by Irish cartoonist Fionnula Doran, broadcast journalist Alex Fitch, and Justin Wadlow, curator of the French comics festival Les Rendez-vous de la Bande Dessinée d’Amiens.
Friday evening and all day Saturday are public events; and on the Saturday in the University Main Building on Grand Parade, these include a Manga workshop run by Inko and Chie Kutsawada, a discussion of New Internationalist’s comic book anthologies, Bryan Talbot, Jaime Huxtable and Chris Geary exploring how they make their comics, and an ‘on stage’ interview with Dave McKean about his latest book Black Dog – the Dreams of Paul Nash.
Tickets are priced between £5 and £20 for a ticket to all of the public events, and from £30 to £60 to include the additional academic strand; available from the University of Brighton online shop. (more…)

Comics Unmasked: Starting a month of shows about comics and controversy, Alex Fitch talks to three of the creators of a new exhibition at the British Library – Comics Unmasked: Art and Anarchy in the UK – which looks at the cultural and social connections between the last hundred years and more of British comic books and strips. Alex discusses the various titles on display in the library show with curators Paul Gravett and John Dunning, which range from an erotic comic drawn by Bob Monkhouse to original annotated scripts by Alan Moore and Mark Millar. Also, in an extract from a Q and A recorded at Gosh! Comics, exhibition designer Dave McKean talks about the look of Comics Unmasked, as well as other comics he created designed specifically for gallery display, which are collected in the forthcoming book Pictures that tick 2: Short Narrative Exhibition. Plus, a recording of the guided tour of Comics Unmasked by Gravett and Dunning, with additional contributions by Adrian Edwards and Tim Pilcher. Children’s book illustrators: In an hour long show about children’s book illustration, Alex Fitch talks to three generations of illustrators: David McKee, creator of Mr Benn, King Rollo and Elmer the Patchwork Elephant; Dave McKean, artist of graphic novels and picture books by Neil Gaiman, young adult books by David Almond, and Richard Dawkins’ first science book for children The Magic of Reality; and Jim Kay, illustrator of Patrick Ness’ A Monster Calls and Toby Forward’s Flaxfield Quartet of novels about dragons.
Also includes an extract from Dave McKean’s presentation of his work from The Magic of Reality at the book launch in Foyles, September 2011.
