Action – The Story of a Violent Comic: Guest presenter Professor Martin Barker (University of Aberystwyth) investigates the story of Britain’s notorious Action comic, which was launched on Valentine’s Day and banned by Halloween in 1976. Professor Barker explores the rise and fall of the comic, what elements of the strips were censored and censured, and how the legacy of Action was continued in “The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic” – 2000AD. Also, in a panel discussion entitled: “Poor, angry white kids”, Barker discusses Action with its writer Pat Mills and 2000AD artist Jim McCarthy. Grant and Pat Mills discuss the history of the strip, working with Joe Colquhoun and the real life events that influenced the comic. …will be held on 19-20 August, 2011 at the Imperial War Museum in London, and is aimed at comics scholars, practitioners, and enthusiasts. Conference speakers and guests include: Pat Mills (Charley’s War); Martin Barker and Roger Sabin on Doonesbury; Garth Ennis (Troubled Souls, War Stories) and Francesca Cassavetti(Fabtoons).
On Friday 19th, there is an academic conference, in which University students and writers will be presenting papers on the subject of War Comics throughout the day, followed by a talk by Charley’s War author Pat Mills. There are tickets available for the conference which includes the talk by Pat Mills, or the talk is available as a separate ticket.
On Saturday 20th, there are talks, panels and workshops by small press creators and international authors, including a hour long discussion with Garth Ennis on stage in his first UK appearance at a comics festival in many years.
All Saturday events are £6 / the final event of the weekend, The Comics go to War film screening is FREE!

The Comics and Conflicts Conference will be held on 19-20 August, 2011 at the Imperial War Museum in London, and is aimed at comics scholars, practitioners, and enthusiasts. Conference speakers and guests include: Pat Mills (Charley’s War); Martin Barker and Roger Sabin on Doonesbury; Garth Ennis (Troubled Souls, War Stories) and Francesca Cassavetti (Fabtoons).

Alex Fitch talks to two of the creators of Marvel UK’s seminal Who comic strip printed in Doctor Who Weekly. Pat Mills co-wrote the first 43 instalments of the weekly Doctor Who strip with fellow 2000AD cohort John Wagner, bring to the page such outlandish tales as The Iron Legion and The Star Beast about a Robot Roman army and a psychotic cute alien who befriends children. Dave Gibbons drew 56 of the first 60 instalments of the Marvel comic, making him the most iconic artist to be associated with Tom Baker’s Doctor in comic strip format and drew the first episode of Peter Davison’s run, as his swan song. Alex talks to Pat and Dave about their work on the comic and also about Pat’s forays into Who on the radio, writing scripts for Colin Baker and Paul McGann.

Nearly two decades later, his penetrating, crisply drawn portraits of young adults’ longing and alienation have made him one of America’s most acclaimed graphic novelists.
In conversation with Toby Litt on his first UK appearance, Tomine discusses his recent works, Shortcomings and Summer Blonde, and the collected manga of Yoshihiro Tatsumi, which he is editing. Followed by book signing.

Diary Drawing brings together disparate types of visual journals and autobiographical graphic novels to examine drawing and diary making as process of thinking and acting, fundamental to human experience. Diary Drawing explores the application of line as a means of documenting, rendering and transcribing intimate and individual histories to a public audience. Strip!: Comics and the outside world
In today’s show we’re looking at periodicals that look at the crossover between comics and the outside world.
In the first of today’s interviews, guest presenter Grant Rogers (a former animator on such shows as Tales of Beatrix Potter and Dogtanian and now an educator at the Imperial War Museum) is interviewing Pat Mills about his critically acclaimed serial about the 1st World War – Charley’s War – which was serialised in the pulp war comic Battle Picture weekly in the late 1970s and is now being reprinted in lavish hardback volumes by Titan Books.
Then, Duncan Nott and Alex Fitch are talking to Joel Meadows, publisher and editor of Tripwire magazine which ran for ten years and now exists as an annual publication and features the links between comic books and multimedia from films to TV shows and animation. He has also written a new book – Studio Space – about the work of comic book artists, which is released tomorrow.
