Bad Planets and Misguided Islands: Starting a month of shows about comic book creators who collaborate together, Alex Fitch talks to two pairs of creators who come from outside the world of comics. In an interview recorded at the MCM Expo, London October 2013, actor turned writer Thomas Jane and illustrator Tim Bradstreet talk about their work on comics and graphic novels such as Bad Planet and The Lycan. Also, in an interview recorded at Daunt Books, Marylebone, children’s writers and illustrators Sarah McIntyre and Philip Reeve discuss swapping roles on various projects including The Phoenix comic and their latest book Oliver and the Seawigs, which is about moving, sentient islands and their headwear!

Starting a month of shows about comic book creators who collaborate together, Alex Fitch talks to two pairs of creators who come from outside the world of comics. Panel Borders: Nelson

Panels from Nelson by Dan Berry, Duncan Fegredo, Rob Davis, Sarah McIntyre, Jonathan Edwards and Suzy Varty
Nelson: Continuing our month of shows looking at depictions of lives on the page, Dan Berry talks to four of his fellow creators who worked on the award winning anthology graphic novel Nelson, published by Blank Slate Books, including the book’s co-editor Rob Davis and artists Duncan Fegredo, Jonathan Edwards, Sarah McIntyre and Suzy Varty. Nelson depicts 54 days in the life of the titular character, a young and then adult female Londoner, who is born in the first chapter set in 1968 and we follow her life to middle age in the present day. Dan discusses the history of the project, the aspects of autobiography that were absorbed into each creator’s pages and the collaborative processes involved in working on a exquisite corpse method of storytelling. Also in a Q and A recorded at Waterstones, Piccadilly, Sarah McIntyre talks to author David Almond and illustrator Oliver Jeffers about their collaboration on The Boy who swam with Piranhas and Jeffers’ latest picture book, This Moose belongs to me, which combines the artist’s use of painting, collage and word balloons to create a fable about collectivism for younger readers!
